These photographs are taken with a variety of Nikon and Canon bodies and lenses on Fuji print film. The extreme close-ups depend on being quite near wild birds, and the only locations where this is appropriate and possible are in protected areas like parks and preserves, particularly where birds are being rehabilitated or unable to live in the wild due to injuries. I am interested in the artistic potential of birds as subjects, and do not represent these photographs as "wildlife photography" in the traditional sense.

All photographs are light-exposed color C-prints on Kodak Royal or Kodak Endura paper at 12 x 18 or 20 x 30 inches image size. They are dry-mounted on white 100% pure cotton fiber rag mat board backing, and matted in white 4-ply double mats of 100% pure cotton fiber rag board to 20 x 26 or 30 x 40 inches mat size. Each print is titled and signed with edition number on the permanent 2-ply mount in pencil, and also on the double window mat. The mat package is backed with 3/16 inch acid free foam board. Frame size is 20 x 26 or 30 x 40. All mounting and matting materials are archival quality.

The images are shot on 35 mm film, then digitized at high resolution. The image files are edited with conventional photo software to expand dynamic range, to adjust color balance, to improve contrast, to remove artifacts like scratches, dirt and scanning errors, and to rotate and crop. Such "digital darkroom" editing does not manipulate the content of the photograph; rather it reproduces traditional darkroom techniques used with chemical and paper processing.

The prints are produced on commercial photographic printing equipment by exposing paper to light, and fixing the image chemically.
